Why Choose Dental Urgent Care for Wisdom Teeth Extractions

2 - Home Page

Wisdom teeth (third molars) are the most commonly extracted teeth because of a variety of reasons where they cause pain, discomfort, or issues to surrounding teeth. Most people develop impacted wisdom teeth – meaning there is not enough room in the jaw for the teeth to develop normally like the rest. An exam done by a dentist and with the help of X-rays can tell you what you need to know about your wisdom teeth and their future. When you come to the dentist, a panoramic X-ray can show that the teeth have grown at an angle towards the adjacent teeth, at an angle towards the back of your mouth, or similar to your other teeth, but without room in the jaw to fully erupt.

Wisdom teeth need to be extracted because they are causing pain, resulting in decay to adjacent molar teeth, or are not able to erupt due to spatial constraints of your jawline or angle they naturally form. Wisdom teeth are most commonly extracted before they start to cause pain or damage as a preventative measure to preserving the second molars and eliminating future problems.

Wisdom teeth are extracted due to several, potentially overlapping reasons:

  • Pain/discomfort in the mouth, face, and jaw
  • Problems with getting food or debris trapped underneath the gums or behind the wisdom tooth
  • Tooth decay of the partially erupted, or impacted wisdom tooth to adjacent teeth
  • Infection of the area, gums, or a fluid-filled sac (cyst) forming
  • Problems with alignment of teeth due to wisdom teeth impaction

The dentists at our facilities are quick and gentle. The idea of wisdom teeth extractions should not hinder you from the procedure. It is most effective to extract all wisdom teeth in one visit to save time, money, and potential pain/decay from waiting. Before injecting a local anesthesia for numbing, your dentist will numb the injection site so that not even the needle is felt. Your dentist will numb the area of extraction generously so that you may experience some pressure, but should not expect to experience any pain.

At Dental Urgent Care, we value your time and your dollar, as well as provide the technology and skill to care for you with efficiency and comfort. The dentists, hygienists, and assistants at our facilities will strive for your comfort before, during, and after the procedure. After wisdom teeth extractions, you’re able to go home that day and work the next.

More details about wisdom tooth extraction

Wisdom teeth are located on the top and bottom of your jaw, right along the back corner of the mouth. They are adult teeth that often don't have any room to grow, which causes them to become impacted. This can cause pain, infection, and numerous other dental problems, which is why dentists perform wisdom teeth removal procedures.

Wisdom teeth are also called third molars and they usually start to appear between the age of 17 and 25. Some people's wisdom teeth grow in just fine. Other people never develop wisdom teeth. Sometimes impacted wisdom teeth don't cause any problems, but your dentist may want to remove them to prevent future problems.

The wisdom tooth extraction procedure and you

Wisdom tooth extraction is an outpatient procedure, which means that it only requires one visit to the dental clinic. This is one reason why this procedure is so popular with patients who choose to travel to Mexico. However, wisdom teeth removal is still surgery, so you should always be certain that you're getting the best care possible. It's important to talk to your dentist about the procedure and follow all of their directions closely.

Once your mouth is fully numb, your dentist makes an incision in your gum, which exposes the tooth. Any bone blocking access to the tooth root is removed to allow access, then the tooth is removed. Sometimes wisdom teeth must be divided into sections and extracted in pieces. Your dentist then cleans the area, and then stitches the wound closed. Gauze is also inserted over the site of the wisdom tooth extraction to create a blood clot to promote healing.

After your wisdom teeth extraction procedure

When your surgery is done you can head home, but it's important to play close attention to your mouth during the ensuing days. It's normal to experience pain after wisdom tooth removal but over-the-counter medication usually takes care of it. Another good home remedy is holding a cold pack over your jaw to relieve pain and swelling. Some people may experience more pain after wisdom teeth removal. In these cases, your dentist may recommend prescription pain relievers.

Small amounts of bleeding for up to 24 hours after wisdom tooth surgery is normal. You should try not to spit too much because there is a risk of dislodging the blood clot from the tooth socket. Just follow your dentist's suggestions for gauze replacement. Some swelling and/or bruising is also quite common, but should improve in a couple of days.

For the first 24 hours after wisdom tooth surgery, you should eat soft foods, drink lots of water, and avoid strenuous activity. You should also avoid hot, carbonated, caffeinated, and alcoholic beverages. If you're a smoker or use some other variety of tobacco product, avoid any usage for 72 hours after your wisdom teeth surgery. If you chew tobacco, you should avoid using it for at least a week after your wisdom tooth extraction.

If you received stitches, they will dissolve on their own and will not require another visit for removal. If you have any problems swallowing or breathing, fever, excessive bleeding, or severe pain, you should call your wisdom tooth extraction specialist. Other symptoms that could be indicative of a more serious problem include swelling that gets worse after a few days, pus oozing from the wisdom tooth area, numbness, pus or blood coming from your nose, and severe pain. Remember, our urgent dental care clinic is right here in the U.S., so on the off-chance that there are any complications with your wisdom teeth removal procedure, you can get it quickly resolved.

Most of the time there is no need to return to our clinic for a follow-up visit. Simply follow all of the dentist's recommendations and you should expect an easy and normal recovery.
