Needles Tidbits

Needles is a city in San Bernardino County, California. Its unique name was taken from a cluster of pointy cones at the peak of the Mohave Mountains called The Needles. The city is specifically located at the Mohave Valley territory of the Mojave Desert. Furthermore, Needles can be found near the borders of the state of Arizona and Nevada. The city is just over a hundred miles away from the Las Vegas Strip.

Geographically, Needles is part of the San Bernardino Metropolitan area. However, the city is segregated from the other cities. You can access the remote city of Needles via Interstate 40 and U.S. Route 95. The 2010 census data only reported 4,844 people living in Needles. A slight increase from the 4,830 residents at the 2000 census.

Needles is composed of a huge Mohave Native American community. Because of this, the city is considered an entrance to the Mojave Desert. Not too far away, you can find popular destinations such as the Fort Mojave Indian Reservation, and Mojave National Preserve.

The Mohave, one of the many tribes residing near the Colorado River, are Native Americans that are occupying the Mojave Valley for centuries long before the Europeans came to the area. The Mohave people are called 'Aha Makhav. In the Mohave language, 'aha means "river" and makhav is a word for "beside." When translated to English, the Mohave are the people who live near the river.

These people survived through trading with the other tribes. They can easily access other parts of Southern California by passing through the Mohave Trail. It was only during the 1770s when outsiders explored the territory. Francisco Garces, a Franciscan missionary, was the first European to have interacted with the Mohave people.

Needles was established in May 1883 because a railway company built a station near the Colorado River. The new train station at Eastbridg, Arizona is just three miles away from the city. The historic Mojave Road leads to the Mojave National Preserve. This preserve is located between Interstate 15 and Interstate 40.

The Mojave National Preserve was founded on October 31, 1994. Originally, it was known as the East Mojave National Scenic Area. Did you know that the Mojave National Preserve is the third biggest National Park System in the country? It occupies a total land area of 1,542,776 acres. In 2016, the Mojave National Preserve was able to attract 585,635 visitors.

Joshua trees are found along the roads of the preserve and you can also enjoy its natural features such as the Cima Dome, Kelso Dunes, and Marl Mountains. Within the Mojave National Preserve, there are several parks and recreation such as Providence Mountains State Recreation Area, and Mitchell Caverns Natural Preserve.

Another interesting find in the preserve is the ghost town of Kelso. You will still be able to see the town's obsolete railroad depot. Usually, the temperatures during the summer ranges from 90 F to 105 F. Despite the scorching hot temperature, snow is a common occurrence in the mountainous areas.

Along the Mohave Trail, you can also find the Fort Mojave. It was built in 1859 as a home to more than 1,100 known members of the Mohave Tribe. 12,633 acres of the fort is in California and other portions of the Fort Mohave Indian Reservation are found in Arizona and Nevada.
