Kingman Tidbits

Kingman is the county seat of Mohave County, Arizona. Communities such as Golden Valley, and New Kingman-Butler are next to the city of Kingman. These cities contribute a population of more than 45,000 to the Lake Havasu City-Kingman Metropolitan Statistical Area. Though Kingman is part of Arizona, it also near key cities of Nevada. In fact, Kingman is 85 miles away from Las Vegas, Nevada and roughly 165 miles from Phoenix, Arizona.

According to the data provided by the United States Census Bureau, Kingman occupies a land area of 30.0 square miles. Kingman had a total of 28,068 residents in 2010. The population went up in 2016 and the city reported 29,029 people living in Kingman.

The city's history started when a U.S. Navy officer was assigned to construct a federal carriage road crossing the 35th Parallel. Lt. Edward Fitzgerald Beale was also entrusted to assess the probability of using camels as pack animals to carry supplies in the southwestern desert.

In 1857, Beale began inspecting the road, and two years after, he started what he had to do. Beale's construction was connected to Highway 66 and Interstate Highway 40. Up to this day, when you visit Kingman, fragments of Beale's wagon road is still present in White Cliffs Canyon.

In 1882, Kingman was established and it was placed in between the Cerbat and Hualapai mountain ranges. During this time, Arizona was known as Arizona Territory. Hence, newly founded places like Kingman only had a humble railroad siding near Beale's Springs.

Kingman got its name from Lewis Kingman. He was the one who surveyed the newly built line of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. The railway travels from Needles, CA to Albuquerque, NM. Lewis Kingman was assigned to oversee the construction of the track from Winslow, AZ to Beale's Springs. The town of Kingman was conveniently near this train line.

From 1864 to 1867, the county seat was given to Mohave City. However, this portion of the Colorado River of the Arizona Territory was reassigned to Nevada in 1865. After Nevada became a state, the city now belongs to Lincoln County, Nevada. The remaining Arizonian territory was transferred to Mohave County. In 1867, Bullhead City was hailed as the new county seat.

It did not end there though because the county was moved several times after that. In 1873, the town of Cerbat was the county seat. Then, it was given to Mineral Park in 1877. Finally, after much deliberation, it was decided that Kingman should become the official county seat of the Mohave County.

With its wide open spaces, Kingman was chosen to be the base of the U.S. Army Air Force. In fact, 1 of 3 runways was 6,800 feet in length, making it one of the USAAF's biggest station. The airfield played a vital role in America's history by training more than 35,000 troops. After the war, Kingman Army Airfield was used for storing the various antiquated military aircrafts.

The city experienced economic growth when major employers moved to Kingman. New neighborhoods were added to provide houses to professionals working at Ford Motor's proving ground at the Yucca Airfield. Kingman was also near other workplaces like Duval Copper Mine and the Mohave Generating Station. Other than that, the Kingman Airport Industrial Park was able to provide a steady income to its residents.
